“The Hinokuni Matsuri is one of Kumamoto’s biggest festivals. One of the main events in the Hinokuni Matsuri is the Otemoyan Dance (おてもやん総おどり). Dozens of groups crowd the main streets in downtown Kumamoto and dance to traditional music blasting from loudspeakers. Some of the groups really take the dance seriously, and practice for weeks leading up to the festival.”
