The vast, treeless expanse of Aso reminds me of the Mediterranean climate hillsides of my California hometown, but the cause is quite different: that in the latter case is lack of water, while in the former, annual burns. The burns not only remove desiccated grass surface to allow their surviving roots to flourish but also kills of any saplings. Without the burns, Aso would be a forest unsuitable for grazing.

This year’s burn is scheduled for Saturday, 2/9. It is scheduled to begin at 13:00 and may continue for as long as 12 hours but is conditional on the weather. If you’ve never experienced this, you should. Various events are held in the evening of this day; readers’ suggestions would be appreciated. More pix at the link. - William
