The end of an era - literally, not figuratively - is a week away. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have visited Kumamoto and nearby regions many times. Much fuss was caused by the emperor kneeling, shoeless, with victims of the Unzen volcanic eruption of 1991 as some thought it demeaning.
