We’ve discussed how the series of faults that resulted in the Kumamoto quakes run from Yatsushiro to Aso, resulting in the Tateno Gap (see link below) - without this niche in the caldera wall, Aso would be a big lake.
A similar geologic structure exists on Mars, and NASA will land a rover on it around 3:30 AM Japan time. Though now bone-dry, it once held a large lake, and NASA is hoping to find signs of long-extinct life.
