Sakurajima, a volcano in our neighbor to the south, Kagoshima, went kablooee. It is a fabulous place to visit- really, a must if you want to fulfill your Kyushu sojourn - and you can even climb up it a bit (or dangerously far, as I did), but clearly timing is important.
