That guns are extremely tightly regulated in Japan (pistols are basically illegal; long guns for hunting require proof of training and strict licensing) is a relief. This attitude goes far back in Japanese history to periods called “sword hunt,” when authorities newly-empowered after a period of anarchy would gather and destroy swords that had proliferated.
