William With summer afoot, we would like to present a list of springs that entertain children and adults alike and are free. This is a spring directly behind the bamboo grove at the library, though not directly connected, so the startlingly cold water is as fresh as can be. Its lack of current and very shallow depth make it ideal for children (bring little scoops and collection buckets - here be zarigani, hidden in muck caves along the mainstream!). A short way downstream leads under a pedestrian footway to the mainstream, water flowing in from the springs at Suizenji park. A few monstrous slabs of granite, likely hurled from Aso ages ago, provide wonderful rock jumping for the more adventurous. Facilities include a rather clean public restroom and free parking if you know the narrow-lane entrance from Densha dori. A good way to learn this is to arrive there first on foot, backtrack the narrow lane to Denshadori, and implant that in your mind. As always, pack-in, pack-out. Trash receptible are generally not provided, and even if are, it’s better to bring everything home. Bring a large plastic garbage bad. Below: spring, access, and jumping rocks on the main stream. Parking is allowed on the left side of the dirt road.
