In 1948, Kumamoto Castle’s main keep had not yet been rebuilt, so the Uto Turret (宇土櫓) would have been the castle’s most impressive surviving structure. “Udo” seems to be an alternative pronunciation of “Uto,” recorded in the 日本国語大辞典, a dictionary akin to the Oxford English Dictionary.
