Gina McCarthy, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), visited Minamata on Tuesday as part of the G7 Summit to open on Mie Prefecture on May 26. She met with the city’s mayor to discuss efforts to reduce mercury pollution and also spoke with students at a local high school recognized for their sustainability efforts. She was quoted as saying, “Reducing mercury pollution is a consideration which involves all of Asia.”
