Well, that was apparently a good match. Kumanichi’s headline had it as 仏勝利、トンガに23ー21- that is, “French victory over Tonga, 23-21”. The article itself referred to France as フランス. This reminded me of the kanji used - ateji, or kanji-derived homonyms - to refer to foreign nations historically important to Japan. France, of course, has one; Tonga does not.
