Long ago, before tunnels were bored through the mountains to create a more direct rail line connecting Kumamoto and Kagoshima, the sole route hugged the coast. It still exists, called the “Orange tetsudo” after the citrus grown in the area. It’s popular among those who want to go nowhere slowly. They’re offering a special menu to enjoy as you absorb the views and a passbook where you can receive a stamp at each station reached.
