Kirk here with a little more on the semiconductor plant to be finished by 2024. The article says that it is projected to employ 1500 people.
To put this number in context, I looked for a listing of Kumamoto’s largest employers and found this page that lists the Hirata Corporation at the top with 1049 employees:

But, I know this page can’t be right because Sony’s website says that is employs about 10,200 just in Kumamoto:

Still, 1500 is a significant number.

So, it too is in the high-tech sector – another reason that Kyushu is known as Japan’s “silicon island.”
