Kirk again. Unfortunately, I didn't quite realize the severity of the quake when I posted just now. If you look at this English page you'll see that two locations had level 7 shaking on the Japanese scale; that's the highest possible. Mashiki, which experienced level 7 shaking twice in 2016 was spared this time but had 6+ shaking -- surely enough to cause damage. Unfortunately, I'm afraid we are going to get lots of damage reports in the coming hours. Just hope we don't have any more big quakes.
