Actually, I can sort of understand the criticism part. Kumamon has an English Facebook page that usually get way more traffic than this one does. Since the disaster, however, that page has been virtually silent. 13 hours ago, however, it posted one message calling for donations:

Kumamon is great for promoting the positive aspects of Kumamoto. The bear isn’t quite so good, however, at dealing with problems.
