Kumamoto’s hosting the Rugby World Cup was handled admirably and was a good chance to introduce ourselves on the world stage. Seeing the large number of non-Japanese milling about downtown was startling but pleasurable: nobody knew who to stare at. (I often try to mill about by myself, but that’s difficult.) Given the large number of visitors, though, a few bad apples are certain to appear.
