Here's some information in Japanese about the burning of the character for "fire" (火) on the side of a mountain in Aso. The page includes a schedule of the events planned before and after the fire starts on the mountain at 6:30 PM. Afterwards, they will shoot off fireworks (7:20).

Here's an image from TV showing the extent to which Tomishige's photo of the castle recorded small details (e.g. the roof tiles, etc.). The detail and clarity of these photos made them invaluable in the restoration process after Kumamoto Castle was destroyed in the Seinan War. The most recent news I've seen about the reintroduction of Kumamoto oyster has be a little discouraging: Temperatures were too high so many of the oysters died. I hope things improve next season.

The other day I wrote a bit about the exhibition of photos from the Tomishige Photography Studio that is being held on the campus of Kumamoto University:

One reason that the Tomishige Photography Studio is considered to be important is that the founder, Tomishige Rihei, took the only photographs of Kumamoto Castle before it was burned down in the Seinan War. As the segment fromf "Photography in Japan" explains, these photographs made a more authentic reconstruction of the castle possible.

The Kumamoto Gakuen Green Philharmonic will have having their 20th annual concert on 9 March at the Kumamoto Gakuen University Morio Takahashi Hall (next to the Prefectural Theatre). The concert begins at 2:00 and the doors open at 1:30.

An exhibition of historical photographs is underway at the "Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School" (Goko Kinenkan; 五校記念館) on the campus of Kumamoto University. It will continue until the end of March. Personally, I'm very eager to see these photographs from the historically important Tomishige Photography Studio (冨重写真所). NANKAN, Kumamoto Prefecture--The principal of a rural high school that will soon close its doors is honoring this year’s graduating class with hand-crafted figurines made in each student’s likeness.

I just did a little internet search to see how long it would take to find this Facebook page. In the process I learned that "Kumamoto International" is also a company that has three offices, none of which are in Kumamoto. I couldn't find anything on the web site that indicated why "Kumamoto" was in the company name. It could be the name of a founder but I couldn't find any reference to such a person.

Did you know that Jesus Christ was actually buried in Northern Japan? It may also surprise you to know that there is a rock in Oguni (north of the Aso region) that is engraved with Sumerian lettering (from what is now Iraq). Amazingly, such crazy theories are actually endorsed by the local governments where these "historic" sites are located. As you see from the picture, the town of Shingo thought enough of the theory that Christ was buried there to erect an official sign showing the location. In Oguni, the local school board thought enough of the idea that the marks on the rock are "Sumerian" to erect a sign that proclaims the theory as though it were a matter of established fact. Promoting your hometown is nice, but you subject yourself and your town to international ridicule when you embrace crazy theories in order to do so.

In March, some skeletal preparations of dinosaurs that are normally housed in the Mifune Dinosaur Museum will be on display at the Kumamoto Shintoshin Plaza, which is located near Kumamoto Station.
